Prague City of Mystery

Somewhere else a fiery man moves about and a woman in white walks along the walls of the castle fortifications in the light of a full moon.

Old Town 

The winding streets with their names alone (Rytířská - Knight Street, Templová - Temple Street, Konviktská - Convict Street, Betlémská - Bethlehem Street, U Milosrdných - Street of the Kind-hearted, Zámecké schody - Castle Steps, and many others) evoke a sense of mysteriousness.

Jewish Quarter 

In the Jewish Quarter the legend of the Golem came about. The Golem is a figure thought to have been created from straw in the Middle Ages by Rabbi Löw(1512? - 1609). The Rabbi allegedly attempted to breathe life into the straw figure, but the experiment did not work. The Golem got out of control and so the Rabbi had to dispose of him.

Author, genius of secrets of the modern world, and analyst of its relations and mechanisms, Franz Kafka (1883 - 1924), lived in this environment. The hard-working office employee absorbed the Czech, German, and Jewish soul of the city. His home was built literally on the border between two Prague quarters called the Jewish Town and Old Town.

Today a small square named after the famous author and the Franz Kafka Centre occupy this site. The Centre houses Kafka´s written works and the story of his life.
