Iceland Expedition with Snowkites

Snowkiting opens a total new dimension to the ski and snowboard sports. It involves using downhill skis or a snowboard and a specially designed steerable kite similar to that used in kite surfing. During his expedition he and his team came across places, peaks and spots Jules Verne described in his books. They witnessed bloodchilling peaks, private kite spots and haunting snow storms.

What? Snowkiting?

Snowkiting is an outdoor winter sport where people use kite power to glide on snow or ice. The sport is similar to water-based kiteboarding, but with the footwear used in snowboarding or skiing. In the early days of snowkiting, foil kites were the most common type; nowadays many kiteboarders use inflatable kites.

Snowkiting differs from other alpine sports in that it is possible for the snowkiter to travel uphill and downhill with any wind direction. The sport is easy to learn and appeals to people on many different levels. Getting out for a ride in some fresh powder away from all the crowds and lift lines will put a smile on your face that is hard to remove. You don’t even need to be in the mountains to do it, as any snow covered field or sufficiently frozen lake will do. Perhaps freestyle aerial tricks with big hang time is more to your liking.

This is one of the most thrilling aspects of the sport as the kite acts like a giant skyhook and allows you to land a lot softer than at the ski hill. Kites have even been used to pull adventurers and their gear on remote expeditions to the north and south pole, covering distances faster and easier than ever before. In the open back country they can be used to pull you up hill, saving you the work of skinning your way up and letting you focus on the enjoyment of the down. The best part of all is that once you have the gear there’s no lift ticket to buy, just get out there and ride!
